the alchemy & the ecstasy
our friends the white oaks just released their second ep and we made some art for them. if you’re unfamiliar with the musical force known as the white oaks, click here to get a taste. they’re even more eclectic than we are and almost as good looking. plus, they (like your pals here at tmc) like to make stuff with other like-minded folks. after you give them a listen, go watch l.c. crowley’s film, The Wheat And The Tares, starring the band. it’s fresh off the screens of the Sidewalk Film Festival. we made the mini-site for the film as well.
creams
Another from the collage workshop with Chris Lawson. Hannah Hoch’s ghost was certainly in the room.
hushed
Last week our friend, the backwoods bohemian and artistically erudite neo-dadaist pop guru Chris Lawson, was here in D.C. to lead collage workshops at the Corcoran. It was a great time - Chris was inspiring, per usual - and the students made some nice work. Here’s one I made, with a few others to follow in the coming days:
Smokin’ Newports
Here’s a recent marvelous project for Birmingham-based jazz guitarist/composer Carlos Pino and his upcoming release with his band, The Smokin’ Newports. Carlos is the best kind of client because he gave us free reign with this project. He is also the best guitarist in Birmingham. Enjoy.
PS - we love doing this kind of work. send us work. marv will show you the love with a little debbie cake.
the scene tonight
What a throng of people in front of the White House tonight. In one moment, it felt special - a raw, emotional outpouring of thousands of young people exuberant upon their victory, jubilant in seeing that they had successfully made their mark on history and democracy. At another moment, it felt like a complete fabrication and spectacle, all of us looking around at each other wondering if the reality of the moment actually matched what we’ve come to expect from TV scripts. And then there was the threat of debauchery, that herd behavior that brings out the most base of actions - a girl is hoisted up, and for a moment, just a moment, everyone forgets that they are supposed to be celebrating a hopeful new zeitgeist in front of the People’s House and instead expects her to lift her shirt and stick out her tongue. But she doesn’t, and the random stranger next to you looks over and theres something in the air that just makes you want to hug him, or at least smile and laugh, acknowledging that whatever it is thats happening is actually something special, something real, and something worth celebrating.
phosphorescent
I’ve enjoyed Phosphorescent for a long time, and I gave my best effort to create a poster that would match the howling, jaunting southern gothic sound of his music. I failed. Joe and I turned him into a cartoon instead:
another day out
After a short hiatus on the Shepard Fairey hunt, I was able to meet up with a friend for an afternoon search that turned up a few results:
