under the hands of shirlee platjes

October 29th, 2008 by marv

Joe and I pull images for our posters from a number of sources, but there is none that I use more than Google image search. As we work on a poster, we will enter certain keywords to bring up variety of images in hopes of finding just the right - and often bizarre - picture. In doing so, we come across some really wonderful things. Today, while working on a poster for Phosphorescent, I found a site with the following text:

I once fasted for seven days straight. There was another time when I tried to run up and down the four mountains in the Aspen area. When I was 19, I spent three weeks continuously traveling - every night, for twenty-one days, I found myself in an entirely different bed. As though that wasn’t bad enough, I couldn’t even recall the last time I’d had a conversation that wasn’t in broken Spanish. 38 days without relief. Three days of altitude sickness in the Andes. 24 hours of Moab. 30 minutes under the hands of Shirlee Platjes, with fingers capable of creating the feeling of femurs snapping, muscles ripping, I want to cry but know I can’t. About the fast…there was mishap with an imitation Pop Tart on the fifth day.

And one of the many pictures of the author that accompanied the story:

Pencil Mania

October 26th, 2008 by marv

All this talk about “public art” got me thinking about an old tom and jerry where the stuff they draw in a park comes to life. I especially like the singing fruit that morphs into what seems to be rip-off versions of popeye, olive oyl and bluto. Once again reprising his role as jerry is joe, and your friend marv plays the rumbly-tumbly jerry.

Just as I found this Fairey today Neil Young’s “Love is a Rose” serendipitously shuffled onto my ipod:

Love is a rose
but you better not pick it
It only grows when it’s on the vine
A handful of thorns and
you’ll know you’ve missed it
You lose your love
when you say the word “mine.”

I wanna see what’s never been seen
I wanna live that age old dream.
Come on, lads, we can go together
Let’s take the best right now,
Take the best right now…

A few more Fairey’s from today on 14th St. NW, right outside Irvine, where I saw the show again and picked up a limited edition print. Both the show and the print are fantastic.

faireyland

October 19th, 2008 by marv

Artist/designer Shepard Fairey is in D.C. this week and a number of Obama HOPE images and OBEY Giants have consequently appeared all over the city. Friday night Mr. Obey sat on a panel with Al Farrow at the Corcoran for a nice presentation on art with social conscience. Tonight their show at Irvine Contemporary opened. I skipped the opening and instead rested after a long day of biking in search of as many Fairey works as I could possibly find. It was a great day - I saw Chinatown, Shaw, U St., Mt. Pleasant, ran into the Prince of Petworth, made sure there wasnt an Obama pasted onto the White House, and went on a wild goose chase all the way up to Takoma Park (for those of you on the hunt, there is not a Fairey in Takoma at Vision Lighting as reported. While there is an image of Obama on the warehouse, it is NOT a Fairey). I scaled fences, laid in the dirt, and even climbed the roof of the Logan Circle Whole Foods to get shots. It’d be great to find more, so if you spot one please share the address! Click on the individual images for their location.

Here are four illustrations to be published in a devotional book by my friend, Paul Kelly, based on scripture meditations from the book of Proverbs. Each week starts with a collage, as every week should.
